An underwater robot checks the “health” of the Campo lakes

In the bend of the Arno that is home to the hamlet of Campo, S. Giuliano Terme, the splendid naturalistic lake area will become an open-air laboratory for the underwater robotics team of the Information Engineering Department of the University of Pisa, which will carry out various experiments in the waters that will allow permanent and non-invasive monitoring of the area.

Indeed, an agreement between the Municipality of San Giuliano Terme and the Department of Information Engineering was inaugurated on April 13, which will allow researchers to use the lake to operate Zeno, an autonomous underwater drone capable to monitor the situation. the seabed and the waters.

For the occasion, Zeno carried out the first monitoring, in the presence of the environmental adviser of the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, Filippo Pancrazzi, and the director of the Department of Information Engineering (DII) of the University of Pisan, Andrea Caiti.

“On board the robot we have different sensors, including a side-scan sonar – explains Riccardo Costanzi, professor of robotics at the DII – Acoustic signals will be sent directly to the seabed from Zeno, to precisely establish the depth thanks to the analysis of echo reflection.We will also send diffuse acoustic waves, to understand both the conformation of the seabed and the size of the marine fauna that lives there.In this way, we will also be able to identify and identify all the objects present on the seabed.

In addition, the robot is equipped with a camera. After its monitoring, we will then be able to combine visual and acoustic information, and have a precise cartography of the lake.

This agreement allows us to experiment with different functions of the robot in a protected environment like that of the lake and, at the same time, to make available to the municipality of S. Giuliano Terme environmental assembly information that is always up to date”.
