Blue in the chair in Thun: Switzerland beaten and the nearest World Cup – sport

ROME. Italdonne is one step away from direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Cristiana Girelli takes care of it, with a goal from a free kick eight minutes from the endto eliminate Switzerland at the Stockhorn Arena in Thun and win the three points that lead Les Bleues to the top of Group G with 21 points (two more than the Swiss) with two games remaining in the playoffs.

“It was a painful but well-deserved victory, now we are masters of our destiny,” commented coach Milena Bertolini at the end of the match.

In September, against Moldova and Romania, they can buy tickets for Australia and New Zealand.

“The girls were very good because they were in the game until the end. – added the coach – As I asked before entering the field, they fought and were confident in their abilities. I congratulate the whole team because they have well deserved these three points. We have taken an important step towards the World Cup and now everything depends on us. This success is important for the movement and for this extraordinary group of girls: they gave everything to have the opportunity to participate in the World Cup again”.

The desire for redemption of the blue, after the remedied defeat in Palermo last November against the Swiss, is great and the scenario of the match is clear with Italy playing the game and Switzerland waiting.

The first half is not brilliant, the blue ones struggle to dislodge the defense of the hosts who are dangerous on the restart.

The leitmotif of the second half does not change with Italy in search of the goal which however is slow to arrive due to a few too many errors in the closing phase. In the end, it was Cristiana Girelli who, eight minutes from time, gave Italy the lead with a precise free kick that cleared the barrier.

The frantic race and the liberating cry of the number 10, at his 53rd cross in the national team, contain all the emotion of a group which knew how to react to the difficulties by sweeping the obstacles and signing a historic comeback which brings Italy closer to qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

The last minutes are of absolute suffering with the blues defending the advantage. Australia and New Zealand are not far away.
