Feeding begins at the Surplus Food Recovery Center

‘Cibo al Centro’, the project for the recovery of surplus fresh and very fresh food in the historic center, supported by the Municipality of Genoa and the result of the networking of some of the main third sector and ecclesial realities of Genoa, kick-off: Auxilium Foundation (which is also the governing body), Shalom Association, San Benedetto al Porto Community, coordinator of the Ricabo Network, Banco Alimentare, Coop. Emmaus Genoa Society, Acli, in addition to the Diocesan Caritas of Genoa, which offered its support in the start-up phase of the project.

Thanks to the collaboration of traders willing to donate fresh and very fresh unsold food, Cibo al Centro achieves a double objective, in accordance with the spirit of Law 166/2016: to reduce food waste and make food accessible to individuals and families. in difficulty first quality and necessary for good nutrition.

The center of San Siro: 150 square meters renovated, more than 50 volunteers

Cibo al Centro is located in the heart of the historic center: 150 square meters made available by the parish of San Siro, a point of reference for many people and families in need: here, the solidarity store ‘La Stiva’ for food has already been active for years packed. Now Cibo al Centro adds an important piece, which involved the restructuring of some rooms and the purchase of workbenches and refrigerator elements: “Here about 50 volunteers from the different realities involved will work side by side – remembers the Father Andrea Decaroli, parish priest of San Siro – who will work together to multiply the good, combining attention to the dignity of people, to the environment and its resources, as Pope Francis invites us to do in his teaching : everything is connected “.

The support of the Municipality of Genoa

The project is part of the Caruggi Plan of the Municipality of Genoa, with support of 70,000 euros for restructuring, equipment and project start-up costs. Indeed, the Caruggi plan foresees “the enhancement and revitalization of the historic center” and Cibo al Centro fully meets the objective.

“The project – explains the councilor of the historic center Paola Bordilli – was one of the first to start within the framework of the Caruggi integrated plan on the social axis, in which we wanted to insert concrete actions to intercept real needs and give a targeted response. situations. of fragility. During the pandemic, we have seen difficult situations multiply and the Food at the Center project has succeeded in intercepting a need of many families. The combination of social and innovation in the chain logistics of recovery, transport and conservation for redistribution represents a winning model that can give important results even in the medium term”.

“The food in the center – comments the general director of social policies Mario Baroni – was chosen, through a call for tenders, because it presented an innovative and effective way of responding to a demand, unfortunately pressing, especially in certain areas of the city such as the historic center, of foodstuffs Offering the possibility of distributing fresh and very fresh food to those who need it means giving the possibility of bringing to the table foodstuffs such as fruit and vegetables that many families are forced to give up. Each institution involved contributes and values ​​its own experience. In particular, the Auxilium Foundation promotes the general coordination and educational services in the schools of the historic center; the Shalom association, referring to the parish of San Siro, makes the premises available; The San Benedetto Community enriches the project with the good practices of the Ricabo Network, in particular the communication support on the commercial network of the alleys, the construction of recovery logistics integrated by the associations at the various points of sale that have joined the project and the implementation implementation offered by the Bring The Food application; the Food Bank supplies the division with surplus fresh and very fresh produce; the Coop Société Emmaüs Gênes coordinates the recovery of surpluses from shopkeepers and large retailers in the historic center during the start-up phase, thanks to a 100% electric vehicle; Acli promotes the dissemination and dissemination of the initiative.
