Health of the sea in the Gulf of Gaeta: technical table in Province

Analyze and acquire data and technical-scientific information to solve the problem of marine water health overlooking the coastal areas of lower Lazio and Campania beyond the Grigliano river: this is the theme at the center of a technical table which yesterday, at the initiative of President Gerardo Stefanelli, met at the decentralized headquarters of the Province in Formia. The meeting brought together, in addition to Stefanelli, the environmental delegate of the province of Caserta, the mayors or their delegates of the municipalities of Minturno, Formia, Gaeta, Cellole and Sessa Aurunca, the managers of Arpa Lazio, Arpa Campania and Acqualatine .

During the meeting, ARPA Lazio drew up a table of the monitoring activities carried out with the aim of verifying the conditions of the bathing waters during the summer period, also in the light of the reports received for certain phenomena of abnormal pollution, in particular theincrease in algae population, present on the entire coastal strip. From the studies carried out, it appears, explain via Costa, “that the phenomena detected are completely natural and generally caused by an increase in the average temperature of the Mediterranean basin which, combined with a high concentration of nutrients present, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, therefore determine a rapid development of microalgae”. Arpac Campania pointed out that the studies carried out show that “these phenomena are not detectable only in anthropized areas but in an extensive and widespread way, so it is scientifically confirmed that the algae aggregations detected are caused by completely natural phenomena. , which are manifested by the formation of streaks and plates, favored by the combined action of land and sea breezes and the contribution of surface sea currents which tend to favor the aggregation of all that floats, including therefore foams and fragments of dispersed matter”.

For its part, Acqualatina communicated that the urban treatment plants under management are all in possession of the discharge authorization and that the province of Latina, for discharges into the waters of the Gulf of Gaeta, in its authorization provision , imposed much more restrictive limits since the gulf was defined as a “sensitive area”. The Ato 4 technicians then pointed out that the existing urban treatment plants, in addition to currently serving a large part of the provincial town, could guarantee subsequent use for tertiary treatment, even if such interventions would be costly on the integrated water service tariff.

During the meeting, it emerged that the Municipality of Minturno has implemented a series of activities in order to eliminate these phenomena from marine waters, among which, in particular, the purchase of a boat for suction foams and wakes and an active role will also be played, also through a proactive action towards the Lazio region, in order to extend the sensitive area from the Gulf of Gaeta to the Garigliano river. Finally, the province of Caserta pointed out that urban wastewater treatment systems are authorized by the region of Campania.

At the end of the work, the President of the Province Stefanelli proposed that the table “undertake to implement all feasible actions, also with the aim of rebuilding a climate of confidence in the institutions and control bodies operating in the field of water protection. Actions that the province of Latina will implement in the coming months and which consist of: aerial survey of the provincial coasts, with thermal camera, in order to identify possible contributions of untreated water in coastal waters; the study of the currents of the gulf; mapping of the weirs present on the coast, with a feasibility study for the total interception of wastewater with pre-treatment, mapping of the areas not covered by the sewer network; dialogue with local authorities for actions to protect and control industrial installations”.
