| A complaint to the Livorno Public Prosecutor’s Office was filed this morning by Greenpeace Italy, Democratic Medicine and Pro Natura: subject to the urgent request for verifications and information on the impact of environmental emissions from the ENI refinery and the effects on health populations from neighboring areas, particularly in the district of Stagno (Commune of Collesalvetti). The complaint, presented by the lawyer Riccardo Gambi of Lucca, on behalf of the associations, accompanied by various attachments, the result of investigations and numerous elements collected.
Epidemiological evidence confirms a heavy impact on the health of the inhabitants of these areas – said Marco Caldiroli, president of Democratic Medicine – it is necessary and urgent to carry out additional investigations in the district of Stagno. The Paths study on the state of health in sites of national interest has in fact highlighted an increase in pathologies, congenital malformations and excess mortality in Livorno and Collesalvetti. We believe this may be related to exposure to hazardous substances released into the environment primarily by the ENI refinery. The spotlight was on the situation at the refinery due to the accident of November 30, 2021 at the lubricant production furnaces: on this occasion, solely due to favorable fortuitous conditions, the accident did not cause any harm to workers, even though it caused extensive pollution of a wide area around the factories. Very few of the remedial measures required by law have been carried out by ENI. In recent months, we had already publicly denounced that the remediation work on the refinery site was scandalously at a standstill, says Giuseppe Ungherese, head of the anti-pollution campaign for Greenpeace Italy. Nothing is done and there are only a few intervention projects which only concern 5% of the land and 0% of the groundwater: what the data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition say. Those who live near the NAS have the right, like everyone else, to live in a clean and uncontaminated environment. We have the environment in the Constitution and the people of Pond have a right to prompt and effective sanitation of the area. Mauro Furlani, President of the National Federation of Pro Natura, finally underlined that the conditions of the last integrated environmental authorization of the refinery are inadequate and do not correctly implement the European policy of reduction and integrated pollution prevention, allowing high emissions of hazardous substances and carcinogens: have determined, over the years, additional and heavy exposures for people and the environment that could have been avoided. |
