losses of 8 billion, support to save food arrives

This is measures of the anti-crisis plan resulting from the mobilization of Coldiretti contained in the provision launched by the government to deal with the emergency in the agricultural sector numbered at 8 billion additional costs between animal feed, fertilizer and energy for companies’ balance sheets.

That’s what the President of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini thanking the Minister of Agriculture Stefano Patuanelli and the Prime Minister Mario Draghi for the interventions in favor of the agricultural sector.

From the beginning of the conflict – underlines the Coldiretti – it happened an average jump of at least 1/3 of the production costs of agriculture due to the direct and indirect effects of energy prices with record values for certain products: from +170% fertilizer, to +80% energy and +50% food, which are hitting constrained companies hard to sell below production costs”. The measures adopted serve a guarantee the survival of companies with liquidity, the reduction of energy costs but also with direct aid for the most suffering sectors without forgetting the need to face the difficulties caused by the lack of 40% of the fertilizers necessary to guarantee the productivity of the land. The green light to digestate represents a fundamental opportunity that strengthens the capacity of the agricultural sector to produce energy with agricultural biomethane, whose process fueled by waste and waste from agri-food chains provides valuable fertilizing materials.

“In a situation where one in three farms (32%) is forced to cut crops, the measures adopted – underlines Prandini – are important for backtrack and not close surviving farms and ranches but it is necessary to plan for the future with the possibility granted by the European Union to cultivate another 200,000 hectares of fallow land to respond to the invitation of the Heads of State to defend food sovereignty to make Italy and Europe more self-sufficient from a food supply point of view, in a period of great turbulence but guaranteeing high standards of food safety both in national and imported production to guarantee European businesses and consumers”.

“That is why we must invest – concludes Prandini – to increase the production and yields of land with rainwater storage basins to combat drought, seriously counter the invasion of wildlife which forces land abandonment in many inland regions and supports public research with ltechnological innovation and Nbt at the service of the production and protection of biodiversity and as a tool for responding to climate change”.
