Nuclear waste: NO to the consumption of agricultural land essential for food production

Sogin transmitted to the Ministry of Ecological Transition the proposal for a national charter of eligible areas (CNAI) to house the national radioactive waste storage and the technology park, after 60 days from the closing of the public consultation.

“Waiting for the CNAI, various newspapers report a still significant presence of Piedmontese sites for which our Region is particularly threatened among the sites likely to house the Italian National Radioactive Waste Repository for a total of at least 150 hectares” , did he declare. Coldiretti Alessandria Mauro Bianco following the “Transparency and Nuclear Participation Table”, organized by the Region in which Coldiretti Piemonte participated.

Piedmont, the province of Alexandria in particular, is the region that holds the greatest amount of radioactivity in Italy, in the six factories built in the past. It is also for this reason that it is important to exclude it in the choice of the site of the national deposit, avoiding, among other things, consuming more agricultural land, jeopardizing the vocation and the agri-food economy of the territory. .

In Piedmont, the total land consumption is approximately 175,000 hectares, therefore equal to 6.9% of the total national surface which is 2,540,000 hectares. The province of Alessandria, with 26,450 hectares consumed, represents 15.1%, after Turin and Cuneo.

“We must oppose choices that always and only penalize agriculture: there are many industrial areas, abandoned and disused, located more or less near large cities, which could very well serve the purpose – added the director Coldiretti Alessandria Roberto Bianco – Let us remember that our agriculture is green, varied and increasingly focuses on sector projects aimed at promoting local products, organic products, the defense and protection of biodiversity and the durability”.

The continued expansion of artificial surfaces, in the long term, risks having serious consequences on several fronts, as well as the possibility of not depending on foreign countries for food supplies, in a moment of great international tensions on the trade, given the Ukrainian war in place.

The alarm caused by the Coronavirus first and then by the war, has brought out a greater awareness of the strategic value that food represents and of the necessary guarantees of quality and safety that must be defended and valued. to defend food sovereignty, reduce dependence on foreign countries and create new jobs.

All this must be taken into account when thinking of the Alessandria area and the spaces that have always been considered “definitely valid” for the storage of radioactive waste.
