“Serious and critical problems for the mental health of minors”. The Tuscan Guarantor’s Alarm

TUSCANY – “Investing in the well-being of miners, taking advantage of the extraordinary opportunities offered by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan”. The guarantor of childhood and adolescence of Tuscany, Camilla Bianchi, asks for it in a letter sent to the government and regional institutions. The guarantor highlights how “the serious problems affecting the mental health of girls and boys, girls and boys have been greatly exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and the impact of the pandemic, with measures such as social distancing, education distance and quarantines, or severe restrictions on sports and cultural practices.Measures that have generated a strong psychological malaise that has led to closure, mood depression, anxiety, fear of the future and, in the most serious forms, even to a constant acceleration of hospitalizations for suicide attempts and self-harm, as recently also highlighted by the general director of Meyer in Florence, president of the Italian Association of Pediatric Hospitals “.

“There has been – explains Camilla Bianchi – a pernicious detachment from ordinary existential relationships and even from one’s own aspirations and life expectations, which has generated in people of minor age a generalized and growing malaise not only physical, but also mental. which can no longer be underestimated and on which action must be taken with timely, targeted and coordinated actions at all levels, educational, social and health”.

For this reason, given the current structural inadequacy of health facilities to face the emergency, the Tuscan Guarantor proposes: “A decisive increase in the number of child neuropsychiatry beds, accompanied by a corresponding increase in human resources capable of dealing with all the different and complex critical problems that may arise during the educational process of minors The creation of intermediate structures allowing an assisted exit capable of guaranteeing the best return of minors to their ordinary life. non-existent and which should on the contrary be put in place, in order to fill a gap that is too often present between families and hospital services”.

Finally, the Guarantor underlines a last urgency: “The imperative need to create adequate pediatric hospices in each region, considering that the continuous progress in the medical field has determined a decisive lengthening of the life of seriously ill minors, which was absolutely necessary. ‘unexpected first’. Places “of life for children in conditions of clinical complexity such that it is no longer logical for them to be in intensive care units or in the services of a hospital”, as underlined by the director general of Meyer in Florence and which can also represent “emergency shelters for these families who, sometimes, really can’t take it anymore”.

A delicate question that the Regional Council will deal with in session tomorrow, Tuesday March 22 and Wednesday March 23 with two motions presented by the Brothers of Italy and the Democratic Party. The first calls for the junta’s commitment to intervene at the national level with the government to ensure that adequate resources are invested with the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the establishment of a table that involves all parties stakeholders, to ensure a regional child support network and adolescent neuropsychiatry system and increasing the number of child neuropsychiatry beds. In that of the Democratic Party, the commitment for the Giunta is to act, always towards the Draghi government, to develop general and shared strategies for the promotion of the mental health of girls and boys and adolescents. And the commitment to give maximum centrality to the implementation of measures to strengthen the field of mental health in childhood and adolescence is also foreseen.
