Sport and Health, ‘WeSportUp’ was born the StartUp accelerator

The WeSportUp accelerator for sports and wellness / health startups was born today in Rome, at the Foro Italico. The initiative, promoted by Sport e Salute SpA and by Cdp Venture Capital’s Accelerator Fund, aims to fill the national gap in investment in innovation in sport which, in the last 5 years, has exceeded 27, 5 billion euros. During the meeting, the technological space where the operational team will take place and presented in a totally renovated space inside the Foro Italico park was presented. WeSportUp, through a public call, will involve approximately 30 sports and wellness technology startups – national and international interested in developing in Italy – and will help provide additional financial support to the most deserving realities with investors. third parties already interested in the project.

”Welcome to the innovation center of Italian sport. Today, I think, is an important day because Italian sport wins another medal that it did not have: being in the ranking of countries that can grow in technological sport. It’s a medal we can all take together, the result of teamwork. I am very happy to be here, it was not easy. Today we are all innovators, it is the value that binds us strongly,” said Vito Cozzoli, CEO of Sport and Health, inaugurating the initiative.

”The sports market in Europe is worth 300 billion, Sport and Health has downloaded 2.4 billion but we can do a lot through innovation. Italian sport can and must make a qualitative leap, believe more in innovation, renew itself and meet the challenges of change and to do this we have the opportunity to support start-ups in our country. I focus on digitalization and internalization, today the country has grasped it well. Start-ups are like sports clubs, they know how to seize the demands that emerge from the market and we want to ensure that ten start-ups a year are welcomed here,” added Cozzoli. ”I always thought that the Start-ups play well in the first half, then there is the interval and they don’t come in the second half, we can make them play the second half and win the game. After two years of pandemic and even a few battles, I see that the social soul of Sport e Salut is finally discharged, ”concluded the President and CEO of Sport e Salut.

“Without proper acceleration, without capital and support at the start, they don’t even have the chance to enter the locker room before a game. We, on the other hand, want to bet on them and for that we have decided to invest in a first step with a fund of 200 million, which will soon become 350 million, with one objective: to launch a program in the territory to involve investors and companies and translate good ideas into companies capable of changing the way of doing sport and to experience sporting events,” explained Enrico Resmini, Managing Director of Cdp Venture Capital Sgr.

The management of the program is entrusted to Startupbootcamp – the first accelerator in Europe with 1,200 companies in its portfolio and with the management of 2 sportstech accelerators in Australia and Qatar – flanked as national partner Wylab, the Chiavari incubator which since 2016 is a pioneer in the implementation of incubation, development and investment programs in sports startups and protagonist of the most important exit of an Italian startup in the field of sports technology with Wyscout. The 2022 edition of WeSportUp will last 10 months and will begin with a scouting phase (lasting 4 months) with the aim of seeking the most interesting realities that develop technological solutions for sport and well-being in all the fields of innovation: performance and well-being, innovative materials, fan experience and metaverse, solutions for the management of sports organizations, smart places, games and export, ESG and sustainability. The research will lead to Selection Day, the day when the 10 startups will be selected to participate in the acceleration phase, a 13-week period which represents the high point of the program.

WeSportUp will be present at the main sporting events organized in the national territory and will highlight the Italian sports system internationally at the most important Made in Italy promotional events. The objective is to develop industrial investments in sport. In fact, sport is the best investment in the future: sustainable, green, zero km, the real new economy of our time.
