Technical table on the health of the waters of the Gulf of Gaeta – At the initiative of the President of the Province of Latina Gerard Stefanelli an interprovincial technical table met at the decentralized headquarters of Formia to analyze and acquire data and technical-scientific information to address the issue of the health of the marine waters overlooking the coastal areas of lower Lazio and Campania beyond the Grigliano river.
The meeting brought together, in addition to Stefanelli, the environmental delegate of the province of Caserta, the mayors or their delegates of the municipalities of Minturno, Formia, Gaeta, Cellole and Sessa Aurunca, the managers of Arpa Lazio, Arpa Campania and Acqualatine .
Arpa Lazio has established the framework for the monitoring activities carried out with the aim of checking the bathing conditions in the summer period also in the light of the reports received for certain abnormal pollution phenomena, in particular the increase in the population of algae, present throughout the coastal strip. From the studies carried out, it appears that the phenomena detected are completely natural and generally caused by an increase in the average temperature of the Mediterranean basin which, combined with a high concentration of nutrients present, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, determine therefore a rapid increase in the development of microalgae. .
Arpac Campania has highlighted that from the studies carried out, it appears that these phenomena are not detectable only in anthropized areas but in an extensive and widespread way, so it is scientifically confirmed that the aggregations of algae detected are caused by completely natural phenomena, which occur through the formation of streaks and plates, favored by the combined action of land and sea breezes and the contribution of surface sea currents which tend to favor the aggregation of everything that floats , thus including foams and fragments of dispersed matter.
Acqualatina communicated that the urban wastewater treatment plants under management are all in possession of the discharge authorization and that the province of Latina, for discharges into the waters of the Gulf of Gaeta, in its authorization provision, imposed much more restrictively than the Gulf was defined as a “sensitive area”.
The Ato 4 technicians pointed out that the existing urban treatment plants, in addition to currently serving a large part of the provincial town, could guarantee subsequent use for tertiary treatment, even if such interventions would be costly on the service rate. integrated water.
The Municipality of Minturno has implemented a series of activities in order to eliminate these phenomena from the waters of the sea, among which, in particular, the purchase of a boat for the suction of foams and wakes and, in in addition, an active part, also through a proposal action towards the Lazio region, in order to extend the sensitive area from the Gulf of Gaeta to the Garigliano river.
The province of Caserta pointed out that urban wastewater treatment systems are authorized by the Campania region. At the end of the work, the President of the Province Stefanelli proposed that the table undertake to implement all feasible actions, also with the aim of rebuilding a climate of confidence in the institutions and control bodies operating in the field of water protection. Actions that the province of Latina will implement in the coming months and which consist of: aerial survey of the provincial coasts, with thermal camera, in order to identify possible inflows of untreated water into coastal waters; the study of the currents of the gulf; mapping of the weirs present on the coast, with a feasibility study for the total interception of wastewater with pre-treatment, mapping of the areas not covered by the sewer network; confrontation with local authorities for actions to protect and control industrial installations.
