The first Food District of Molise is finally inaugurated

An agglomeration of about a hundred companies, generally small and medium-sized, established in the regional territory, specialized in the cultivation of the olive tree, which, with the participation of individual and cooperative craft companies, the mills, will be, even more than in the past, engaged in the processing and production of quality oil (organic, DOP and IGP). The common thread, par excellence of a healthy diet, is represented by the Mediterranean diet. A way of life and a way of eating, which Molise expresses in every detail thanks to its traditions linked to rurality and the richness of biodiversity expressed by its territory, the origin of quality. Olive farms and oil mills, realities included in one or more phases of a production process. integrated through a complex network of economic and social interrelations.
Relying on important tools and actions such as: training, experimentation, promotion and enhancement of the oil and, with it, of the companies that produce it and of the origin, the territory, it is i.e. the place as a whole. The place that goes beyond the meaning always given by the French, Terroir, everything and only referring to the nature of the terroir, knowing that it is, also and above all, history, culture, environment, landscape, tradition.

The place as memory, observation, emotion, and, as such, history, or the possibility of involving the other, the others. The story as the common thread of a dialogue, a presentation/representation, a promotion. The story which, if it is beautiful and well done, becomes communication, involvement, and therefore the success of a product, a company, a place. The private and the public who decide together what and how to do, where and how to go, in order to grasp all the possible objectives that can bring answers in terms of image and income to the company and the entrepreneur; image with the public, at different institutional levels. And, also, the desire to update the lineup. Here, the “Olio Evo Molisano” food district, as an agglomeration – as mentioned before – of companies scattered throughout the region, becomes the tool for public-private dialogue, capable of activating all the strategies necessary to plan the future of olive growing and, with it, agriculture. In practice, the global development of Molise, which – as I have been saying for some time – has what it takes to be a laboratory, an example, for other regions. A role that it has the opportunity to play thanks to its territorial dimensions; the chance to have everything, even the little that remains of rurality and biodiversity; to its being the place of 136 small towns surrounded by countryside.

A program full of interventions that embrace – thanks to the participation and contribution of those who have always represented the world of agriculture, professional organizations – the challenges of the moment, such as those of sustainability between health, society and the environment, with the olive tree and the oil image of the millennia which, despite the attempts of a country distracted by other objectives, continues to represent and tell values that even the god of money failed to erase.

With this important recognition, Molise updates the national register in the hands of Mipaaf, bringing the number of districts to 139, spread over 15 regions, Tuscany having recognized 37, of which 5 are dedicated to oil. With this important tool, which brings together all the prerequisites for putting agriculture back at the center of economic development, and not just of social and cultural development, which the country urgently needs, Molise continues to play the role of a laboratory in the in the field of olive growing, after the creation in 1994 of the National Association of Petroleum Cities; the historic regional park of Venafro, the first and only one dedicated to olive trees and oil; the prestigious “Goccia d’Oro” award, which has given so much to the growth of the quality and image of Molise oil, expressed by its 19 varieties; A regional pruning competition that launched five national champions; the first cooperative, Kairos, which made the olive tree and oil the protagonists of the not easy recovery of normality by those who were victims of gender-based violence, such as raped women; the first documentary, “Gocce”, which makes Fausto, the olive tree struck by lightning, the protagonist.

A result, that of the recently recognized District, which counts, among its many protagonists, Luigi Di Majo, known as “Don Luigi”, the initiator, more than 50 years ago, of this modernity and success experienced by Molise viticulture. Today, after many years, he is committed, with this new creature, to launching an appeal to young people to become the protagonists of a further development of culture in the regional territory. Tireless promoter – after wine – of the olive tree and oil, culture and product inseparable since more than six thousand years ago, they decided to become symbols of the Mediterranean and to contribute to the birth of civilization, to be examples in the rest of the world. Today more than ever, given that over the past twenty years they have come together, on five continents, to mark landscapes, gastronomic cultures and health.
