The more you exercise, the lower your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease

Physical activity and Alzheimer’s. In the many unanswered questions concerning what is called the disease of the century, a certainty finally arrives. Exercise in general and aerobic movements in particular can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The news is contained in a study byAmerican Academy of Neurology. Regular cardiorespiratory exercise, known as indoor cardio, can reduce the risk of developing a form of dementia by a third.

In Italy, 1,400,000 people live with some form of dementia. Six hundred thousand of them suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. This figure is expected to skyrocket over the next few years, so much so that 1 in 85 people are expected to be affected. It is therefore essential to find effective means of prevention.

Physical activity and Alzheimer’s: more than 600,000 people followed for nearly 10 years

The researchers looked at data from 650,000 veterans residing in the United States. Their ages ranged from 30 to 95 years old. No one had been diagnosed with dementia. The work team followed them for 9 years, subjecting the volunteers to identical physical tests for all. The task force was coordinated by Edward Zamrini, professor in the Department of Clinical Research at George Washington University and director of neurology at Irvine Clinical Research. Neuroscientists have assessed the incidence of various forms of dementia, comparing it to their athletic performance.

What is the Met?

The researchers used the Met, ie the metabolic equivalence task, which in Italian can be translated as the metabolic equivalent of activity. It is a tool capable of evaluating the amount of energy used by the body during physical activity, regardless of weight and height.

Physical activity and Alzheimer’s: the results of the American study

The task force divided veterans into five groups based on the level of exertion they were able to endure. Well, if for the least trained the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is 9.5 cases per 1000, for the most trained it drops to 6.4 cases per 1000.

What is extremely positive is that you do not have to work hours a day to get good results. With every small increase in physical activity, there is a lower immediate likelihood of getting sick in the future. Overweight sedentary people are most at risk of developing a form of dementia. The more you exercise, the lower the risk of disease. In percentage terms,

  • the most educated group has 33% less developing dementia,
  • what comes after 26%,
  • the third 20%,
  • the fourth 13%
  • etc
